I used to talk about what ails my constituency often but I stopped. I met someone from Twitter at a lovely cocktail party & they said, "is you always talking about the bad roads." I didn't want to be associated with such negatives. My constituency has never been won by the JLP
except once when the PNP didn't contest elections. The 1st MP Dr. Ivan Lloyd (also a founding father of the PNP but he doesn't get any credit. Only Michael Burke publicly mentions this) was my next door neighbour. He was a medical doctor & his wife Mrs. Eunice Lloyd was a midwife
By virtue of his work in the constituency; by having his medical practice in the constituency that helped many of the poorer people, he cemented the PNP in the hearts and minds of the people of SE St. Ann. Fast forward some years later & he had a quarrel with the PNP
He publicly backed his son to run as the Ind. candidate (probably why he was whitewashed from PNP's history). Though he was very popular & well-loved, the people would often say to him, "Doc, mi love you but a di wrong colour!"
His son was trounced in the elections of course.
Doc, lived happily in retirement & I was a regular visitor to their home for supper and Bible studies (Mrs. Lloyd was a devout SDA) & enjoyed reading the Gleaner before Dr. Lloyd & neatly putting it back. He had an issue with anyone reading his papers before he did😂🙈
Mr. Mullings (Foggy) was the next long serving MP. He had such a humble demeanor. A brilliant organist who would play at different churches each Sunday. He came back to his constituency every Friday evening & there was a long line of ppl always waiting on him. He was well-loved
Ppl felt he could've done more to advance Agriculture in SE St. Ann since he was the Minister of Agriculture. Our next MP was Ms. Ndombet-Assamba. I can't recall how long she stayed but wasn't the customary 3 decades like her predecessors. Fixing the road to Bob Marley's 👏🖒
Can't recall any other major achievementsđŸ€”. She stepped down & homegrown Mrs. McDonald (PDP supporter) started campaigning in the seat. At the last minute Ms. Hanna was catapulted into the seat. It triggered demonstrations until Mrs. PSM told PNP supporters in no uncertain terms
"Don't let the wrath of the PNP come down on you!" There, started the uneasy reign of the current MP.
Ms. Hanna was accepted but grudgingly. For several years the politics at 89 Old Hope Rd. has played out in our constituency. MP never settled down to truly representing the ppl
Jamaica Bauxite Mining Ltd. had stopped operating. They were our main employers & fixed many of the roads in the constituency. The decay in our infrastructure increased. Ppl like me who never had water issues now had to buy tanks. Who had decent roads can only reminisce 😭
MP still haven't settled into rep. the constituency that's bawling out for housing solutions & 1 more High School & water. Shahine Robinson (SIP) was able to make rep & get a brand new school in Steer Town & additonal space for MGHS. Her 1st 6yrs she was in Opposition. Imagine!
My MP will very likely win another term where the needs of the constituency will take a backstage as the leadership race plays out in the now Opposition party. We'll get the same type of leadership, ppl cuss her yet fall in line to get the political spoils & life goes on.
The young ppl have been agitating for change however. They don't buy the argument of political victimization at all. They know beautiful speaking when they hear it & non-performance when they see it. They aren't accepting of the latter. Interesting days are ahead for #SESA.
