My sister's house in Holladay, Utah was targeted by a 20-truck caravan of Trump supporters. They weaved their way around small residential streets on a Sunday evening, targeting homes with Black Lives Matter signs on their lawns.
When the trucks passed the homes where Black and Korean children were playing in their front yards, members of the caravan started yelling "white power" at the kids. The kids parents spotted leaders of their own church participating in the caravan. Olympus Ward 3.
When confronted - the church members (one, a member of the elder's quorum) denied that it had happened saying "No one yelled that. We didn't hear anyone say that."
And perhaps he didn't hear it - likely hard to hear everything chanted when there are 20 trucks involved. The same group then drove through neighborhoods in Sugar House.
Holladay is a conservative, quiet, sleepy town outside of Salt Lake City. It's usually marked as a place where people are nice - the culture is not one of confrontation - it's very passive and polite. For this to be happening there is so surreal and shocking.
Neighbors have told my sister that she's brave to keep her Black Lives Matter sign out in her front yard following this incident.
Last night, she had an intruder in their back yard - footsteps on the balcony off of their 2nd floor after midnight. Was it teenage hijinx? A burglar casing the house? Or someone coming back to send a message? Any are likely. But the point of the caravan was to intimidate.
