People touting Chadwick Boseman's accomplishments while undergoing cancer treatment are hitting me in a weird way - two weird ways, actually. I admire the stamina it took to do multiple movies and related inspirational press appearances while extremely ill, but 1/x
I think it puts pressure on people who are ill to be the same kind of hero. Every person is different, and we already have too much of a macho "walk it off" mentality in America when it comes to disability and illness. 2/x
Additionally, I think it begs a larger question about systemic racism in general. What if one reason why this man chose to push himself like this because we allow so few BIPOC role models and so little representation in film? 3/x
I don't mean to minimize anything here. I'm just wondering if, in addition to admiring these huge achievements, we could take it a call to be better, to build a bigger table, to make enough room where people have time to excel AND to heal. 4/x
