As I begin my journey as a (supervised) clinician this week, I wanted to share a few thoughts that I carry with me into this work. >>
As therapists, we do not get to assume allyship solely because of the industry in which we work.

We do not get to promote ourselves as helping professionals if our helping is not inclusive of ALL people.
We do not get to educate on the benefits of therapy, if we are not equally aware of the ways it is inherently Eurocentric and can be potentially harmful to marginalized populations.
We do not get to call ourselves “change agents" if we are not willing to also do the work to make changes within ourselves and in our own fields.
We do not get to say we assist in "healing" if we are not willing to incorporate appropriate healing practices/practitioners in our collaborative work.
We do not get to advocate for mental health if we are not considering ALL of the ways a person’s mental health may be affected.
Mental health care is not a one size fits all. Taking what you learned & applying it across the board is harmful.

So as I venture into this new identity, I look forward to the ways I will learn, unlearn, and grow alongside the many people I work with.
