Jurgen Schadeberg has passed away. He was behind some iconic photography of the Defiance Campaign and Sophiatown years. Here he is flanked by Peter Magubane (left) and Bob Gosani (right) at the Drum Offices.
He snapped these in 1958 during the Treason trial.
So I am obsessed with Dolly Rathebe. I don't think we do enough to talk about how she was the original "It girl" and first African movie star after starring in Jim Comes to Joburg. Jürgen snapped this.
He wanted to create a beach scene but this is Joburg. So they went to an abandoned mine dump and Jurgen snapped these iconic images for Drum. This led to both Dolly and him being arrested under the Immorality Act as there was the assumption that they were in a relationship.
These were taken in 1952.
Then they were finally create a beach scene AT the beach! This was in 1955 on tour in Durban. Jazz artists and fans had taken the train inspired by The Jazz Train in the US touring various cities in SA and outside the country. Again, iconic.

And 65 years ago when Sophiatown was destroyed, Jürgen's lens bore witness.
