Remember the scene in INDEPENDENCE DAY where Jasmine helps rescue the First Lady, & then, around the fire, tells her, “I voted for the other guy?” It’s a wry moment. It works because it’s understood that no matter who people voted for, they’re all Americans & in this together.

No matter their background or where they live, they’re ALL America. I think about that when reading POTUS’ tweets celebrating instigators as patriots because they fly a banner with his name on it. That’s what patriotism means in his mind. Him.

I think about it when reading that in the face of catastrophic disease & natural disaster, he’s worked to deny aid to people left homeless & dying, and to those trying to save them. Because the state where they live didn’t give him their electoral votes.

That’s not patriotism. Not leadership. It’s gangsterism. It’s acting like a warlord. It’s un-American. And I will fight it, every day, for as long as I breathe.
