Why are we going for Edouard Mendy over Andre Onana? The answer is simple.

1. Height - Self-explanatory.

2. Profile - Whoever we sign this summer will be a stop-gap until we can sign a big name next summer. It is easier to keep Mendy as a second choice rather than Onana.

It will not be surprising if we try for Donnarumma, Oblak or Ter Stegen next summer. We cannot afford to spend big on a GK now because of how much we have spent already and Kepa's presence.

Mendy can be convinced to be second choice in that case. It will be tougher with Onana.

If we sign a big-name GK, it will be easier to convince Mendy to be second choice than Onana. That is the main driving factor here.

We don't need an elite GK this summer. Even an average GK will do. We just need our GK to not be the worst in Europe and to fit our profile.

Onana is a terrific GK and I'm a big fan, make no mistake about it. However, Mendy is no slouch either.

In terms of raw attributes and numbers, Mendy is very promising. It is not entirely clear if he can take the mental step up but if he can, we have a good GK on our hands.

Best case - Mendy turns out to be better than expected and cements himself as our GK.

Worst case - Mendy is a flop but is still significantly better than what we have now.

Most likely case - Mendy does reasonably well, we sign a big-name goalie and he becomes second choice.
