What's funny is that once in a lifetime athletes such as Messi get used by everyone. Fans, media outlets, his club, everyone.
He's pressed, prodded, marketed, bought and sold. He brings millions into the club coffers, fans hang hopes and dreams on him.
The using is so complete and constant that we don't even realize it any longer, even when use becomes abuse. Teammates use him as well.
They shovel the ball to him and run away, screaming "Save us, Leo." Everyone, everywhere uses Messi.
And now, at the end, when Messi says, "Hey, I want to do something for myself," he isn't even allowed to do that. It's so sad.
The very men whose asses he saved now sit in control of a future that he would like to decide, refusing to even just let him be happy. That's all.
I understand money, and budgets, and getting paid and the idea of not letting a prized player go for free, blablabla. It's still so, so sad.
You could spend an entire DAY watching a Messi highlights reel, and not duplicate genius moments. He has given us that.
It's why all I can say is still, let him go, let him be happy. It's the absolute least that they can do, that we all can do. Life isn't logical at times. Times like this.
