As I begin my last September as an educator I find myself reflecting upon my first September 33 years ago. I started teaching at a small country school in Milton - Percy W. Merry. We had 125 kids from K-6. I taught grade 4/5.

Everyone on staff was female. I was hired because I was a male and I could use computers.

It was a fabulous school in which to start my career. The kids were happy for anything done for them. Their parents, hardworking farmers, supported the school & our efforts. The staff ...

...those women were amazing.

As a new grad I realized quickly how little I knew about the intricacies of education. My new colleagues took me under their wings and made me the educator I am today. Linda, Judy, Dianne, Janet, Holly, Lee, Kathy, Bev, Heather, Sharon, Merle . . .

They learned with me. We integrated technology. We focused on literacy and numeracy before it became political because the kids needed that. We integrated curriculum. We explored cooperative learning. We talked about 21st century skills without knowing what we were doing.

Research says that the 1st year of a teacher’s career has a huge impact on the teacher they grow into.

I am evidence of that.

I worry a lot about this fall & schools reopening in the middle of a pandemic.

One of the things I worry most about is those who are just starting out.

So here is my call to experienced teachers.

I know you’re scared, stressed and overwhelmed. I know your practice has had to change

Help those on your staff who are just starting out. Help them understand that this is not normal.

There are things we are adopting in schools that may limit the spread of COVID19 but may not be the best professional practice. Help them understand that. Support them. Learn with them.

Help them appreciate the vital role public schools play in our world.

Remember the difference you can make for a colleague just starting out who is suddenly realizing the gaps in their knowledge.

Be a source of guidance.

Remind them that education is equal parts heart and brain.
