remember google glass? remember those programs that could emulate peoples voices crazy well? remember when virgin galactics 1st spaceflight, which theyve sold tickets for, was supposed to be in 2009? technophiles should know thats what the future will be like. real time vaporware
vaporware is where the term vaporwave comes from. its when a company advertises or hypes up some new tech but then it never comes out. we’ll always be in a perpetual process of this hypertech being just around the corner but it will never actually step fully into being.
this is the release from the “imminent techno future” mindset that is characteristic of a large part of the zeitgeist. theres something called “pre future anxiety”, which can be found in any era where new tech is clearly about “change the game”, but no one can anticipate how
i have said before this is why i think our time has an artistic and spiritual resonance with the early 1900s. both of us were seeing all this new stuff that was about to change life forever but, the change was clearly to be so great that it was impossible to imagine it fully.
so youre put into this paradoxical mindset i call (not that i came up with it) the pre-future state. the society becomes oriented around anticipating what no one can fully anticipate, which is how this new tech will change every aspect of life forever.
side note, i suspect this is why 80s stuff and the 1980s vibe is also so popular. its one reason anyway, it is also in some ways heavily characterized by this pre-future mindset, imo (synthwave, 80s movies, the appeal of 80s style tech, etc)
anyway the reality is that its never going to happen. if you find some jaded physics professor or someone like that, theyll tell you its always been like this. whatever their field is, its always been “just five more years!” until X happens. then 5 years later its 5 more years...
of course some tech advances but in general most of the stuff trotted out is pure science fiction and will never materialize. this dovetails with hollywood mindset because people literally cant tell the difference between fiction / fantasy and reality.
scientists will never fully deliver the crazy stuff they are promising. at most youll get whats happening now. the parlor tricks will advance + be used to justify hope in tech advancing beyond your wildest dreams - again and again. it will never happen. ever. its fake. walk away
the only tech that will truly advance or permeate society will be things that are not really revolutionary in the sense of a fundamental premise (ie heres thing A, heres a better version of thing A) that serve “certain purposes”. i am happy to be wrong (not really) but we’ll see
to see what i mean about the resonance between this time + the early 1900s, for example, you can look up art by a loose group called the symbolists who should be more well known. the themes and narratives and areas of interest etc are synced up with our time for many reasons imo
im referring there specifically to artwork and visuals. cant comment on the literary aspect but if someone can id be interested (i just make da pictures)

yes. obviously google glass is real. what im referring to as fake is the promise of some hypertech future. i think some things are truly “fake” + will never happen because of mans limitations but the things that are real will never deliver “the future” generally being anticipated https://twitter.com/frege_pugilist/status/1300080140312084487
