I found that some end up taking more effort to defend their stance being to decide for themselves how they should refer to others as if it's factual and those being referred to don't know themselves.

English not being your first language (especially if there is no neutral grammatical gender) is not great of an excuse. I've seen many who still got it right. Could be because it was something that some had to get used to after a while. As long as you learn, it's not an issue.
