I found that some end up taking more effort to defend their stance being to decide for themselves how they should refer to others as if it& #39;s factual and those being referred to don& #39;t know themselves.

English not being your first language (especially if there is no neutral grammatical gender) is not great of an excuse. I& #39;ve seen many who still got it right. Could be because it was something that some had to get used to after a while. As long as you learn, it& #39;s not an issue.
