@Uber has been around for a quite a while now, and it's safe to assume that almost every commuter in metro cities knows or has sat back in one.

- A thread elaborating on it's journey so far.

#Uber #UberEats #taxi
Originally founded in 2009 as http://UberCab.com  by two friends @gc (Garrett Camp) and Travis Kalanick. The idea came to them in 2008 while leaving from a conference in Paris. Both were already high on money after selling their startups StumbleUpon and Red Swoosh. man
UberCab was always thought of as an app as it is now, which means it wasn't transformed from a conventional Taxi service like we had before.
After realising the potential, they wanted to hire. Kalanick tweeted out about this, @ryangraves was one of the first respond, and eventually become the first employee at Uber in Feb 2010.
Ryan had a key role in making the first launch of the app in San Francisco in 2011. Hired as a Product Manager, became the CEO though lost it to Kalanick in Dec 2010. Here's how the tweet went: https://twitter.com/ryangraves/status/7422940444
First Launch: UberCab's beta was launched in San Francisco in 2011. It was a black luxury car, which was 1.5x pricier more than a taxi. They faced multiple backlashes from San Francisco taxicab operators.
In 2012, Uber hired several other employees to make their business model more clear. In July 2012, they launched a service in Chicago that allowed commuters to book a ride on an Uber and a regular taxi too (yes, probably to avoid the consequences of San Francisco).
Uber took it's first steps in India in 2013, when Ola was already 3 years into the huge market. Uber took the market easily as it entered, the app's UI was better and download count (in both drivers' and customers') was higher than it's competition.
Though Ola offered cheaper rides, more discount promotions, Uber was hassle free, and considered 'safer' than others.
Troubles: Uber had always said, 'We don't own any cars, all drivers are independent working on their own choice.' It might sound good to us, but not so much to it's drivers.
Drivers filed lawsuit against Uber that 'Independent Contractor Status' was not fair. In Feb 2017, Uber Employees filed complaints on sexual assault in the firm which led to the resignation of Kalanick as CEO, followed by Dara Khosrowshahi, former CEO of Expedia (boom boom YIKES)
While Uber continues to provide various services, it sold it's entire UberEats (in India) to Zomato for 9.99% of Zomato, on Jan 22nd, 2020. Currently, Uber's total assests is US$31.761 billion and total equity: US$14.872 billion as of 2019 (Wikipedia).
