Some reflections on Warren Buffett and my learnings from him -

When I first got introduced to Warren Buffett, in my mid-twenties, it was the compounding rate of his returns and the sheer magnitude of what he had created that impressed me.

As I dug deeper, I was more impressed by his investing philosophy than just by the returns, as impressive as they were.

With time, it was his willingness to share his learnings and mistakes that impressed me even more than his investing philosophy and returns.

With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that as I get older, I am more impressed by his take on life than with his investing philosophy.

Here are the Warren Buffet quotes that have had the most impact on me, and they have nothing to with investing.

"You don’t know whether you’re going to be born black or white. You don’t know whether you’re going to be born male or female. You don’t know whether you’re going to be born infirm or able-bodied. You don’t know whether you’re going to be born in the US or Afghanistan.”

"The ovarian lottery is the most important event in which you’ll ever participate. It’s going to determine way more than what school you go to, how hard you work, all kinds of things."

My takeaways from Warren's concept of The Ovarian Lottery -

1) There is no such thing as a self made man
2) Respect and acknowledge the role luck has played in your success
3) Always be humble and grateful

The second Warren quote that has had an impact on me -

"The big question about how people behave is whether they’ve got an Inner Scorecard or an Outer Scorecard. It helps if you can be satisfied with an Inner Scorecard."

My takeaways on Warren's concept of Inner Scorecard -

1) Compete with others and you will always be left chasing
2)You decide your standards based on what matters to you. And then you better live up to those.

Happy Birthday Warren!

It's not the just the investing returns and the empire you built, but the way you did it 🍻
