Songs referenced in/inspiring Mika songs: a thread
Some of these are confirmed, some are guesses I’m 90% sure of, others may be just coincidences, but in the words of 2007 mika “I’m like a magpie; I steal everything”

1. Figaro/ Grace Kelly
Mika has talked many times about Grace Kelly being based off The Marriage Of Figaro, which is really cool because you can see how he changed and developed it into something totally different and amazing
“I’ve reduced it to triads” *RESUMES PIANO PLAYING*

More Figaro/ Grace Kelly
I could listen to him going “badabbadaba” all day and his voice in Grace Kelly is angelic

2. Heaven Is A Place On Earth/ We Are Golden
I suspect this one is just a coincidence, but there was some
controversy
regarding this in 2009
You can sing “TEENAGE DREAMS IN A TEENAGE-“ over the top of the (similar) big chordal opening, and instrumental
Either way it’s a bop

3. Sarà Perché Ti Amo/ Talk About You
I cant believe mika went and got permission for this from the composers once he realised the two songs sounded alike, and he *still* got berated by the press for “stealing” it
anyway he confirmed this on Casa Mika and numerous other things

4. Smalltown Boy/ Love Today
DOESN’T THIS SOUND LIKE THE LOVE TODAY INTRO FROM GLASTONBURY??
When this came up in Mika’s X Factor playlist I was shook. I was like “why is there a tiny screaming mika in this song”

I’m talking about this, maybe singlehandedly his best vocal performance?
Anyway he goes higher because of course he does

5. Everywhere/ Lola
@mika__mercury pointed out to me that the “ooohaaaaas” in Lola are the same as here
they’re both such beautiful vibey songs. Mika cited Fleetwood Mac as an influence for The Origin Of Love album, and he played Everywhere in a cooking live. Thats my proof

6. Just Died In Your Arms Tonight/ Relax
the LICM booklet credits the use of this riff in Relax. I think in the album version the similarity is prominent, but in the acoustic and symphonic versions (my favourites) it’s unnoticeable, showing how much he developed it

OHAHHIII
Relax, take it eeeaaassy, for there is nothing that we can’t, relax, take it eeeaaassyy, blame it on me or blame it on you

7. You Can’t Hurry Love/ No Place In Heaven
When this was first pointed out to me, I could hear the similarity a LOT, but now I know both songs really well, I have to concentrate to here it. It’s the intervals in “love don’t come ea-sy” and “no place in hea-ven”

8. Standing In The Way Of Control/ Love Today
When this played in a Cooking Lives, I thought it was Love Today
can’t you imagine mika sultrily singing “everybody’s gonna love today” over this? The Brits evidently agree with me as Beth Ditto and Mika sang a medley of the two

9. Here Comes The Sun/ Instant Martyr
When I first heard Mika singing The Beatles in an early demo I almost fell out of my chair
I love his little minor harmonies
