
Whipple's disease :
is a rare, systemic infectious disease..


caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei, primarily causes malabsorption but may affect any part of the body including the heart, brain, joints, skin, lungs and the eyes, common in men.


Symptoms are Weight loss, diarrhea, joint pain, and arthritis are common .
"Whipple's disease" can usually be cured with long-term antibiotic therapy; if the disease is left untreated, it can be ultimately fatal.


The disease is common in farmers and those exposed to soil and animals, suggesting that the infection is acquired from these sources.

Diagnosis is made by biopsy, usually by duodenal endoscopy, which reveals PAS-positive macrophages in the lamina propria containing non-acid-fast gram-positive bacilli.


Treatment is with penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline, and co-trimoxazole for one to two years ..
