To clarify, if you’re not an LA native who grew up buying meat and produce at the Grand Central Market, it was gentrified years ago. It happened within the last 8-9 years. Those popular spots like the jelly sandwich place and eggslut have been there for years now.
My dad worked at Economy Meats and it was replaced by Belcampo. The owner didn’t want to extend his lease. His clientele were extremely diverse: from ppl w restaurants in Little Ethiopia who’d buy lamb to Central American families preparing for dinner. That’s how my parents met.
From what I remember, the owners of the building either didn’t want to renew the leases of some vendors and/or they were charging more. So most of the vendors had to leave. The patrons changed too as most couldn’t afford the pricy produce and meat products.
To repeat, Grand Central Market is already gentrified. Happened years ago. If you’re outraged let’s focus that energy on LA’s Chinatown who’s residents are getting intimidated by their predatory landlords! They lost two grocery stores this past year. Please follow @ccedLA
