My nose informed me something oddly animal was close by. Smelly, in fact. Turns out it was a little sparrow. What a stinky little bird. It flew out of the house as I walked closer to it.
I literally can smell a rat as well. Some years ago, there was one which would lurk in my study late at night while I used the PC. Could smell it everytime....
... eventually, that smelly rat expired from starvation, I assume, on the hall rug and I almost stepped on it in the dark. Bah. - Anyway, I do have a nose some animal odours.
Yes, my doggies are also full of body odours. And yes, I can’t abide my neighbour’s kitchen smells of frying salted fish (infamous dried salted fish)....
... which is why I have to light scented candles whenever that salted fish gets fried next door. Literally stinks like a several-days-old dead rat. Wow that was a threadful of nothing 😅
Another really stench-y food is dried cuttlefish. Whoa the smell .
Ah yes, blue cheese as well, but it tastes good. Smells awful but very palate-friendly. I no longer can eat it because I get allergies - the condition developed later in life. Pity.
I understand from European friends that there is a preserved European fish pickle recipe. Apparently, that smells so bad but takes good...
I’ll say durians give off a strong odour but without the animal sour notes. I can eat a couple of durian pieces and that’s my limit. They are too rich and creamy.
I have eaten tempoyak or fermented durian, cooked and served with rich, when visiting relatives in Sarawak, East Malaysia. Tasty stuff.
Rice, not rich - typo
I recall childhood and early youth days when local friends would cringe at imported cheeses. So smelly, they would say. Even today, some older generation folk in my part of the World, can’t abide the odours of cheese.
Then there is the petai, a bean which has a strong garlic-y aroma when cooked and eaten. I like it, but the urine smells of petai afterward 🤔
In mid-life, I was introduced to Japanese natto beans (fermented sou beans). My friends in Japan were very hesitant to let me try it, thinking its odour would overpower me and embarass everyone at the picnic....
... so when I got home, I did a little research about natto, then went to the Japanese supermarket and bought some to try. Very palatable to tastebuds, although pungent to nostrils....
The trick about natto is to spin the beans with chopsticks until the sticky material around them whips into a thick gooey mass. That keeps them on your chopsticks... 😁
And I noticed that once I started tweeting about these smells and stuff, my Twitter timeline magically got cleaned up of all the political posts. The algorithm is a bit crude but now I know the trick heh heh.
Speaking about food, there was a time I attended a kiddie b-day party. Hostess offered me some trifle which I gladly nommed. I mentioned it was missing the sherry, to which lay said, “It’s a little kids party after all” and I demurred ha ha !
I am deleting my own tweets which break this thread. Mostly typo corrections. Bah ☹️
That previous tweet should say lady instead of lay ... bah
Earlier in the thread, soy beans instead of sou beans, oh boy ...
