Well, for me this topic of Yibo wearing a durag, the ca, the MASSIVE amount of mails that were sent to yuehua and so. I needed to do a thread, i did some research and this is going to be long. So please stay with me until the end.
If you want to debate or comment your thoughts please do so respectfully as well as I will do to write this thread. All the links of the info that i based for, will be at the end.
Let's begin about Hip-Hop culture, such phenomenon came from the slums of NYC, from the voices of the afro-american community. Expressing their feelings through music, rhymes, helping and changing people's lives. Such repercusion ended in a massive movement all over the world.
Including people of all races and different backgrounds. This genre is more than music, is also fashion and dance.
Well but, what is the point here? As I said before, this topic is about the items that Yibo used in the show. Therefore here is my second part: Fashion statement in hip-hop culture.
Among of all the clothes that conforms hip- hop style, the most controversial piece is the durag (has other names as well). A "cap" typically worn to accelerate the development of waves, braids or dreadlocks in the hair or to take care of them.
Why is controversial? Because it has various concepts that people tend to stan only one or two instead of the whole thing:
1. Hair care
2. Fashion
3. Gang culture
Even more, durags have been worn by women since before the 18th century in Europe.
Now, with this clarified let me introduce you the third part and the most stressful of all: Cultural appropiation.
Yeah sounds awful, right? Well, it's a pretty sensitive topic after all.
Do people appreciate hip-hop or do they appropriate it? It depends of what they do, and of course there's a very slim line between the two concepts. I'm gonna put you some examples of appropiation:
- Miley Cyrus in 2013, for her album "Bangerz", did so many collaborations with afro-american artists such us Big Sean and so. But when the hype stopped, she declared that she doesn't like hip-hop at all. So why she benefits from them first and then act like nothing happened?
- Non-afro-american people using the n-word. Okay, at least for me is a word that NOBODY should use. It has such a long, hateful, and offensive history that still persists today.

Appropriation is when someone else takes something for their own use and benefit off it.
At last but not least, appreciation is when people like, understands, acknowledges, credits and RESPECT others culture. Such as Eminem when he wore a durag during the Grammys and nobody said nothing because he was so down for the culture that he only wanted to HONOR it.
I want you to look at this two witnesses (afro-american) that I got from Quora one of them is from a woman that I asked her what she thinks about the case of Yibo and the other is just a reply to other user's question.
To conclude, I only want to say that Yibo love hip-hop culture. He love it so much that he brought up hip-hop style into his life. He would NEVER disrespect it. So PLEASE, before attacking or hating someone do some research first.
I would appreciate it if you could spread this thread to more people, this topic not only happened to Yibo, but every other artist that is trapped in this wrong meaning about cultural appropiation.
Thank you for reading!
