Zuko’s Music Industry Theories for Success Vol. 9: The Cautionary Case of Lupe Fiasco vs Atlantic Records
Lupe Fiasco, Hip Hop Titan! Has some of the best albums OAT but with some major L’s along the way... but why? Did he just miss that hard? Did he just forget how to rap....? FALSE! There was an evil villain holding Lupe captive in a creative cage... the infamous Atlantic Records
Lets start before that. Lupe was found by Jay Z, signed to Roc Nation, set to release F&L on Roc but it got leaked and Roc Nation handled it poorly (there was other executive drama going on) but Jay told Lupe to drop F&L on Atlantic Records instead and switched his contract over.
F&L was album (1/6) of his 6 album contract with Atlantic. It won a Grammy and put Lupe at an artistic leverage point against his label. He had freedom for his next album. He crafted a dense narritive concept album with political messages and societal inquiries: The Cool(2/6)
With album 2, Lupe announced his artistic plan. Release 3 albums then retire, F&L The Cool & LupEND. Completing the complex narrative & changing the rap world.
But The Cool (while is my top rap album oat) wasn’t as accessible or popular as its predecessor. Atlantic needed more.
Lupe was crushed by his father passing, the “flop” of his masterpiece record and now Atlantic threw him in chains. They cancelled the plans for LupEND. Demanded he get more “modern” electronic beats with catchier hooks and dumbed down lyrics. This is how we got 2010 Lasers (3/6)
Atlantic got what they wanted Lasers & The Show Goes On were wildly successful but Lupe was in a dark place. Attempting to find himself in other projects, like a Japanese cartoon. He continued making music and made F&L2 (4/6) with an all black album cover to show his depression
F&L 2 flopped on the charts and with fans. Lupe was uninspired. And it seemed we would never get him back. But 3 years later a bright Lupe appeared. Painting, practicing martial arts, writing stories again and making his best music to date: T&Y with his painting as album artwork
Lupe happily turned his newest project to Atlantic but it got rejected. “Make a new one its not going to sell” it was about to be scrapped until Anonymous, the hacker group, threatened to leak dirt on Atlantic Execs for the original T&Y(5/6) Lupe was finally free again
The 6th album was kind of in the contract, kind of not. Lupe put together throw-away tracks from the past 5 years into the album Drogas: Light (6/6) just to make sure he was completely out of his contract. His label fed depression had subsided and his creativity was high as ever
And this brings us to Lupes first independent studio album Drogas Wave. A masterpiece concept, more dense than anything he or any rapper has done. Lupe having complete control and not caring about sales, only the art. Imagine if we had albums like this through his whole career😓
The Lessons:
1. Artists, be very very careful with contracts
2.. You dont have to sign to a label at all. Most people don’t have to sign to labels to make it these days
3. Fuck Atlantic Records
4. If music fails and labels get you down. Keep your creativity alive with other arts
I love Lupe and honestly this thread couldve been a lot longer. I once wrote a 15pg paper on this exact topic in 2016 (before drogas light & wave)
i hope we get more narratives like The Cool 2 Drogas Roy or LupEND
I order you all to study his works!
