I hate that this media cycle forces Black writers to churn out heartfelt tributes after unexpected loss. We deserve time to process. The pieces will be better when we’re ready. We don’t have to respond less than 24 hours after a major loss
Was just talking to @NotJayConnor about how are art is killing Black creatives. Being forced to consume Black trauma and write about it immediately in service to the news cycle without proper time to process is a part of that. There has to be another way
Objectivity is a white supremacist lie. It doesn’t exist. Black writers covering all of this trauma and death this year, let alone compounded over a career, takes a toll. We are paying a heavy cost to service a corporation’s bottom line. They do not care about us.
But they know we care. They know we know that our writing can help people who are hurting and that we’ll stretch ourselves to do that because we care about our people. But there is always a cost.
