JESUS DID NOT DESCEND TO HELL.

For the sake of others, I will make this a thread.

"He descended into hell" is a doctrinal expression described in the 'Apostles Creed' of the Roman Catholic Church, there is no scriptural evidence to show that Jesus descended into hell.

As a matter of fact, the Apostle's Creed today is a lengthened version of the 'Old Roman Creed' written by Marcellus, Bishop of Ancyra to Julius Bishop of Rome.

"He Descend into Hell" was disputed strongly and was omitted in the first version of the creed.

But the 'Old Roman Creed' only served the Church in Rome. At a Council in Milan, Saint Ambrose wrote the 'Symbolum Apostolicum' (Symbol or Creed of the Apostles) to Pope Sirius, unifying what became the creed and accepted by all churches.

This version included "He descended into hell", the phrase was largely disputed by theologians, and clergymen as well. Rufinus, a co-writer later explained that by the expression 'He descended into Hell'....

the Apostles' Creed confesses that Jesus died and through his death for us, conquered death and the devil who has the 'power of death'.

In Greek ᾅδης (hades), can mean merely “the grave” so a more accurate/literal version would be, “He descended into the grave”
