Our nation won’t rise or fall with November’s election—that is giving too much credit to one official. It is taking up too much space in our brains and hearts and affections too.
The righteousness that exalts a nation, the adding to the beauty, the battle for a more just society,
the true, the right, the good is being won or lost, enhanced or diminished at morning prayer, and the dinner table, and the art of neighboring, and care for your local school, and commitment to your local congregation, your voice speaking up for those without one.
Voting is important, but it is not everything.
The rise or fall of our civilization will not trickle down from the Oval Office. Righteousness, truth, goodness mercy, justice, decency doesn’t work that way. The Oval Office is a reflection of our common rising or falling.
We will elect who we are.
So, let’s focus on who we are instead putting al our hope or fear in who we elect. They don’t have that much power.
