Ramadan is a time where I feel reenergized in my faith

Ashura is a time where I am reminded of what that faith means to me

“I learned from Hussein (ع) how to achieve victory while being oppressed”

#Muharram1442 #Ashura
This tweet isn’t meant to divide as commemoration of Imam Hussein (ع) and love for the Ahl al-Bayt does not belong to a single denomination, but every Muharram I am reminded of why I am blessed to have been born into (and remain committed to) the Shia tradition
One of the many reasons I am Muslim and have committed myself to constantly exploring and having a greater understanding of my faith is because of the concept of “Red Shi’ism” — a concept that Dr. Ali Shariati defined but Imam Hussein (ع) exemplified
The idea that a life committed to justice regardless of how powerful the other side is — even if it leads to martyrdom (contextual understanding of this phrase is important here) — is a noble life and one worthy of living
Ashura is as much political as it is spiritual and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise

It is through the story of Karbala that we learn that it is our duty to stand against oppression

The injustice of that time takes several forms today, we must be united against all of it
Ashura is very important to me because I was always fascinated by this time of mourning even as a child that wasn’t fully aware of faith

What always brought me back whenever I became weaker in faith was Imam Hussein (ع) and his sacrifice during Ashura
I hope that everyone — Muslim, non-Muslim, agnostic, etc. — can learn from the important story of Ashura and the sacrifice that Imam Hussein (ع) made at Karbala

كلّ يوم عاشوراء كلّ أرض كربلاء
