Langley Park, MD is in danger of being gentrified and it’s residents are in danger of being displaced !!! THREAD:
Langley Park, just 10 mins from DC, has a large population of working class, Latinx immigrants. It’s residents consist mostly of undocumented/mixed status families, most originating from Central America
Even before COVID, Langley Park was an area where investors were looking to buy property because of its easy access to DC and new purple line being constructed in the area
Once COVID started Langley Park quickly became a hotspot due to people not being able to properly socially distance since most households have more than one family living together. With unemployment rates going up, everyone was in need of rent relief or any support they could get
Unfortunately because of their immigration status, many people did not receive stimulus checks and are ineligible for the government assistance programs. The few rent relief funds that undocumented people could apply for quickly ran out.
Now that evictions are being allowed to start up again, many families that have been months behind on rent will have no place to go. Working class immigrants being intentionally pushed out of Langley Park
