Y’all really wanna know why Black people are needing appropriate representation in tv/movie roles? white dumbasses like me were raised to believe Black people are funny and their role in the group is to be funny, it’s a stereotype that hurts a lot of Black folks.
Example: I’ve been watching a lot of movies from the early 2000’s & EVERY Black character I’ve seen has been a goofy ass person that’s over the top. But when I watch films made and directed by Black people they’re like me & every other white role. So why isn’t there normal roles?
This over the top Black background character says more than funny lines- Black people are loud, obnoxious & have no boundaries in the workplace. It implies that they see everything as a joke. I didn’t realize what the message in Hollywood movies was saying bc it’s subtle.
Think. If the only exposure white people have to Black folks is thru movies & all we see is the white Hollywood version of Black people do we really think we have enough screen time and representation in white society of our Black Americans to show us what they’re like as ppl?
So this is damaging where I stand bc I have heard hiring managers pass on candidates bc they may be too loud or a big cut up & I am surprised I didn’t put it together until now. I’m slow I’m sorry. I have heard Black women talk about how their hair prevents them from jobs too...
White america is toxic and I can’t believe natural hair and a stereotype can disqualify a perfect candidate but of course I am shocked by this bc I’ve only been denied worked due to being disabled. I can’t imagine the extra extra struggle Black folks face.
WE NEED TO BUST STEREOTYPES UP IN HOLLYWOOD PRODUCTIONS. This is detrimental to Black folks & POC safety and overall health/happiness. Misrepresentation literally kills Black people.
I’m just going to say it. My god Black people don’t catch a break anywhere and it’s up to us as a whole society to make room and let them rest while there’s peace and justice for all. Get to work & figure out where you are failing to make room for their safety & comfort.
As an autistic person I rely on movies, tv and social media to explain the lives and minds of others. I naturally struggle to understand others that aren’t me. I’m certain tv educates others on societal things but does it do it fairly is the question? The answer is no btw.
I’m so grossed out by the fact that I was surprised at the time I met a Black person that wasn’t funny or enjoyed jokes/humor bc I was conditioned to believe Black people are ready and at my exposel for my entertainment. So today I asked myself why did he make feel uncomfortable
Well I’ll tell you. I was in the wrong, he didn’t perform the way I expected, so I asked myself now why did you expect him to act a fool? & I figured this incident out watching a few movies after I was UNCOMFORTABLE seeing goofy Black people in the background making a joke out of
A serious work situation & the character was sexually harassing the coworker & goofing off in the work meeting while all the white men were working hard. So I was like hold on all the Black people I worked with were the backbone of the companies I was at this isn’t real life...
Anybody w a brain can tell you white men don’t do shit they have others do it for them while slapping their name on it. Can’t let the cat out of the sack now can we? Oops. So projection- we know bullies do it so Hollywood has to be projecting how goofy white ppl are via Black ppl
Anyways sorry for the long thread I just don’t know if anyone is talking about this or not but the subconscious is a weird place that needs to be questioned daily. Don’t be like me and expect Black humor you aren’t entitled to it. Also check out more Black indie films/books!
Anyone with an opinion or more information is encouraged to reply. I send this thread solely in hopes to wake up other white zombies from this subconscious thinking. Also please donate today to Black creators if you can. I’ll be plugging in links when I get back to service.
