Back in February a pair of Mistle Thrushes nested on a traffic light(!), with their eggs hatching during #StormDennis. Mistles are early nesters (they're known as Stormcocks), but this was early by their standards. Little did they know, they were going to be media stars (1/6)
The video I tweeted of them went a tiny bit viral and Thrush fan, @JonMitchellITV featured them on his weather forecast that night. The next day there was a press photographer there. It was all getting a bit surreal. Even the #LeedsPeregrines club had changed allegiances (2/6)
Before these traffic light nesting, storm braving, early nesting Mistle Thrushes had even managed to sign up with an agent, they showed up on News at Ten! (Very small) crowds began gathering on this busy #Leeds street corner for a glimpse of these avian celebs 😁 (3/6)
Despite nesting in a location that's 90% tarmac, the plucky adults were finding loads of worms to feed the 4 chicks, who were growing up fast. At this point the female moved on to start building a new nest, leaving the male to look after the chicks. That's dedication! (4/6)
By around 15 days since hatching, the chicks were looking more like teenagers. Lots of wing exercising and generally being moody. Thoughts started to turn to the youngsters fledging the nest straight into a busy 2 lane highway. Would they be able to make it? 😬 (5/6)
It was a nail biter, but there was a happy ending for these UK red listed birds. All four young 'uns successfully fledged without being hit by a bus and were seen being frequently fed by the adult male Mistle Thrush (6/6) #StormCock
