The political panic about city centres is not about city centres in general, it’s about London. A fundamental shift will of course knock Manchester too, but that’s not what’s driving No 10. The panic in No 10 is that London doesn’t look like it should.
The PM doesn’t drive round through Mcr in an armoured car. Neither do any of his MPs represent Mcr. This is about looking out of the window and not understanding why the London economy isn’t working the way it was. (Unfortunately, like politics, economics is about people.)
There’s dust up in the air and it will take time to settle. The smart leaders will take that into account and plan accordingly, see where the opportunities are. Not seeing loads of evidence that’s happening in Mcr any more than London tbh. But it isn’t gong to stay the same.
