We’ve heard from our @MiamiHerald colleagues and readers in response to our statement on @ArmandoSalguero’s tweets. We are listening closely and humbly to feedback and we are grateful for these thoughtful responses.
While columnists have broad latitude to express their opinions, his comments were uninformed, insensitive and deeply troubling. For that, we apologize. We expect our columnists to base their opinions on reporting and facts. We are addressing this matter internally.
To be clear, @ArmandoSalguero’s tweets do not reflect the views or values of the Miami Herald.
As a journalism company, the foundation of our work is finding the facts and reporting them.
We are disappointed that @ArmandoSalguero linked to a source that is not credible.
We want to state an incontrovertible truth: Our country was built by enslaved people, and the very fact of their enslavement is racist. It is troubling that this factual information and legacy of injustice are not more widely understood.
We @MiamiHerald have the responsibility to address this internally, in our community and our coverage. We are committed to being a diverse organization that reflects our community and we have redoubled our efforts to ensure that our coverage is inclusive and anti-racist.
We remain committed to highlighting the social injustices that still exist today through our reporting, including our recent series on racial and economic disparities.
