Here at McDonald’s on Franklin Street, where a UNC athlete-led Black Lives Matter march is set to begin in a few minutes. Among those already here: UNC hoops’ Leaky Black and Andrew Platek. Follow along below, for @dailytarheel @DTHSports
Garrison Brooks is also here, plus a sizable chunk of the softball team & others
...plus Armando Bacot, Walker Kessler, RJ Davis, Caleb Love and Anthony Harris
Team merch spotted for UNC field hockey, track and field, softball and cross country among others.
Huge turnout here
Also spotted: UNC track and field/cross country head coach Chris Miltenberg
UNC basketball representing here
Kendall Marshall’s also here walking near the team
Again, worth noting the turnout here given that virtually the entire crowd seems to be associated with UNC athletics. Nearly entire crowd dressed in black, of course
Coming to a stopping point here at Morehead
One UNC athlete: “This system was built for people like us not to succeed.”
“...All we want is an equal fight. We don’t want any advantages. We want to be treated like human beings.”
“...After sports, this is what we’ve got. Our black skin.”
UNC women’s soccer’s Rachel Jones speaking now.
“What are we supposed to do when we follow all the rules and they still think we’re scary? They’re still threatened by us? The system is broken.”
Jones talking about the importance of voting: “We can no longer live in a country where the president refers to us as thugs, or says we come from shithole countries.”
One white member of UNC track and field: “This might be the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life...I’m tired of this shit. White people, stand up for your fellow black people.”
“He’s a human being...they’re all human beings. We need to put an end to it.”
UNC hoops’ Brad Frederick also here
UNC athletes and coaches on the steps of Morehead #BlackLivesMatter
One final thing worth noting: the march ended with organizers handing out voter registration forms, emphasizing the importance of turning out in November
