One of my favourite artists ever is Norman Rockwell, very talented, uniquely qualified to portray capture an era, a way of life and somehow also exactly who I am and who I used to be, when I see these drawings, I see myself;
But although people often think of him as someone who perhaps shared a romanticised nostalgic view of life, he didn't avoid sensitive and political subjects in an amazing way;
But as someone for who WW2 played a huge role in her life, it's pictures like these that always feel like a punch in the gut.
They're cute and fun at first, but I can't help but imagine the stories behind these drawings, the pain, the fear, it's there, hidden.
And this picture makes me cry every Christmas.
Rockwell often used models and the photos he took are often as interesting and fun as the art he made;
But sometimes you can't help being hit by a wave of nostalgia, we know better, the past wasn't fun, there was lots wrong in the 1950s... but when I see this series portraying a girl and boy's life, I can't help but getting jealous.
Anyway, thanks Mr. Rockwell.
