Probably one of the most loving yet poignant descriptions of a #neurodiverse person I’ve ever seen in a book, @stevesilberman’s Neurotribes .
“By smell, he distinguished between the various acids and their products. With colours he had the greatest number of distinctions. No poet paid greater attention to his sensations than Cavendish did.”
Cavendish was a talented scientist, and his #Autism is described as an asset to the world of scientific research.
As a person with #dyspraxia, who is also neurodiverse, I am reminded of something I’ve been longing to see in people just like me.
Far too often, the “people with disabilities are a burden” angle makes it to the evening national news. This is a bad thing because the parents, families, and people with these conditions internalize this toxic narrative.
What is often overlooked is the fact that we can give back to our societies in amazing ways if our society is willing and able to accommodate our differences and listen to what we do and don’t need.
