My feeling on the Ubisoft thing is like… I feel like even people on the outside who feel like they understand how out of touch and ideologically stuck in the 90s AAA upper management is are still underestimating them
It looks justified to say they are intentionally targeting the alt right with this game, but the even sadder thing is it’s probably not even true. These people barely acknowledge that reality exists at all outside of their studio, homes and the cars that go between them
I would say they see stories as pure references to other media they liked when they were in their 20s, which was the last time they read a new book or comic or saw a non-franchised movie. They don’t even have an interest in learning the ways the world has left them behind
When you show them a news broadcast of civil unrest, or the effects of climate change, or the march of contemporary fascism, it’s basically like a movie to them. Just a fun idea to riff on. They don’t necessarily mean badly they’re just solipsists
I have seen pitches at AAA studio meetings that would instantly age you 25 years. Really really insultingly dark and exploitative garbage presented with a list of feature bullet points and opportunities for fun. Nothing they do will ever surprise me
