privilege explained briefly:
"privilege" isn't about whether you should feel personally guilty for having a violent or oppressive history.
it's just about the fact that there are extra hindrances to success that other people (those who aren't like you) have to deal with.
if you're white, straight, male, whatever, nobody cares. you're not oppressing people by existing.
there are big institutions that are oppressing those people, which are not oppressing you.
that's privilege.
that's all it is.
you don't have to worry about the extra things.
there are concrete and provable ways in which (on average!) it is simply easier to exist and succeed as a white person in this country.
that doesn't mean that your life is perfect, or that you didn't work to get what you have now.
it means you didn't have those extra barriers.
for instance:
did you smoke weed when you were younger?
did you ever get in real legal trouble for it?
did you ever get caught by cops, get your pot taken, and get let off with a warning?
would that have ruined your future college and career chances if you went to jail for it?
going to jail for drugs as a minor means you're VERY likely to go to jail again in your life.
the criminal justice system is basically built to ensnare people in a lifelong cycle of repeat offenses, and cops enforce more on ex-cons.
this was just a single one of many, many examples.
there's actually an entire field of study about stats like these, called "sociology".
it's the scientific study of population groups and how they interact with institutions, and building models to explain these trends.
this is exactly why you've heard so many people say that "sociology is SJW nonsense" to try to delegitimize them.
they're scientists who came to a conclusion that those people disagree with by studying data and evidence. that's dangerous to their worldview.
especially funny that many of the people who think sociology is bollocks also self-identify as "logical" and "rational", but they get their fight-or-flight emotional response triggered by a professor studying data and saying that racism is provably real.
ok this thread is going in a different direction so i'm gonna end it here.
just remember: nobody wants you to feel guilty or sad for the way you were born, aside from a few internet clowns.
that's not helpful, and it's actually kinda shitty.
also: we are all marginalized, in terms of class.
nobody has a secure existence under capitalism.
let's build a world where nobody is left behind, where we are all materially secure enough to be in charge of our own destinies, instead of the constant threat of destitution.
