Tho this thread is on Tangled, RTing bc in my exp when I see harmful trends on a show but other white ppl dont, giving many specific examples helps them see it, & this thread does that. White ppl 2 white ppl, heres an example of the Very Low Bar of recognizing offensive material https://twitter.com/tangledtxtposts/status/1299480919326126080
On top of providing specific examples to show a larger trend, this thread also shows a skill I think is good for white ppl to have, to say “I don’t have the authority to speak on this in depth” but to still raise the concern that something feels wrong (& then seek input to fix)
Every little detail is important, down to the “minor” things shown in this thread like the color design on black chars in different lighting. “Minor” things are still symptoms of a larger problem: an entirely white environment/an environment that doesn’t value & uplift its BIPOC.
This was written by a white woman; of course the input of BIPOC should be prioritized, and I want to use this thread just as a means of talking to fellow white people (esp. working in animation) about the Bare Minimum lens we should be looking at every detail of a production with
And more importantly for fellow white creators - Speaking Up when we see stuff like this happening in production! It should not be the responsibility of the (likely few!) POC on our crews to stick their necks out & put in the emotional labor of objecting to racist content.
And white leaders - take concerns seriously when they’re raised and Genuinely Work To Fix Them. It’s intimidating enough for anyone to speak up, but it’s particularly scary for BIPOC, because they could experience retaliation for doing so.
And of course, crews NEED to be diverse. Our goal should not be “don’t portray negative stereotypes.” Our goal should be to have positive, authentic representation, and you can ONLY do that with diverse voices in the room (optimally, with them *leading* the production).
(And I talk about some of my experiences here but I just want to say I am absolutely not a perfect white ally, no white person is. I am constantly learning & unlearning, and am just hoping to speak to other white people about being conscious of their learning & unlearning too.)
One last note that I used this tangled thread to speak to a larger issue in animation, but didn’t mean to convey an assumption that the tangled crew didn’t fight against the stuff brought up in the thread - they did fight it. Even if crew speaks up, they are sometimes not heard.
