Slavery is a huge theme in Stormlight, more so than the other Cosmere books.
The Alethi have so deeply internalized being slavemasters that it manifests in their approach to technology. Fabrials literally enslave spren. The Ardentia are slaves who use and develop these fabrials.
The Parshmen are more valuable as slaves than human slaves because they are more ideally slave-like. They lack identity.
It is this relationship to identity that slavery is unwound in Stormlight. When Kaladin's identity is weakest, he is the most slave-like.
Shallan tries to enslave aspects of herself to cover her shame. She creates Veil and Radiant to live her life so she never has to be vulnerable.
But this enslavement is undone by the necessity for Truth that Pattern has. She cannot be a slave master. She must be herself.
Dalinar tries to enslave the other High Princes and the King- all for their own good. But his greatest victory comes from enslaving his lust for combat. Self-control. Dalinar chooses his identity and refuses to let go of the pain associated with that choice.
As the Parsh regain their identities they become free. And they only become monsters insofar as they lose that identity to the Fused. As a people their bodies are exploited as vehicles- enslaved.
Venli's identity is what allows her to transcend this trap.
To be a Knight Radiant requires cooperation with the spren, and a commitment to authenticity. The Knights failed because they couldn't reconcile their identities with the truth of history.
This ended cooperation with the spren and slavery flourished.
Odium's bond wipes away identity and enslaves. There is no cooperation with Odium. Only enslavement. Giving up responsibility and identity.
In shattering the other Shards Odium did the same- subtracting the identity from each Shard leaving mindless broken power behind.
The real task ahead of the Knights is to construct a society that fosters identity so that it minimizes slavery. That requires mindful reflection of the leaders on who they are- not the roles society has made for them.
Dalinar- Author
Jasnah- Queen
Renarin- Hero
The path out of the slave master mindset is constructing a society centered on people- rather than requiring people to serve the society. Which means that everything must be remade.
This is what the Everstorm symbolizes. The need for society to change. The awakening of the slave.
