Just another day thinking about how WQ returning the comb to JC showed an intense understanding of what it meant for him to lose his home and family, and her asking him not to lose more because of her.a
And it's echoed in the Wen's turning themselves in, showing that ultimately WQ and JC were echos of each other. They had a shared suffering due to their instilled sense of Honor and what was Right.
They lived their lives as they were told they Should, and ultimately it was never enough to save them.
Which is an interesting angle for something like MDZS. One the story doesn't focus on, but it's there in the background.
Because who else uses Honor to justify their actions? JGY. "What else could I do?"
These three on on the spectrum of it. WQ who does what she believes she must, even if it kills her. JC who does what he must even if it means killing the only person he has left in the world. And JGY who does what he must, even if it means he does unforgivable acts.
And it's interesting, what it means to the story, that the only one at piece with their "what I must" was WQ. She never hid it, never apologized for it, never punished herself for it.
JC spent years stewing in anger, seemingly blaming himself for trying to live and do his filial duty. In the end he is in tears, wondering if it's worth it.
And JGY spends years of his life dedicated to hiding everything he did, never admitting it until forced.
This thread got away from me but.
TLDR/ I love the WQ/JC dynamic bc ultimately she is everything he wanted to be, on a moral level. And I can't help but wonder, in the end, how much JC compares himself to JGY.
