Hey y’all, I’m gonna take off my romance author hat for a second and put on my oncology pharmacist one. I (literally) write the book chapter on colon cancer and in light of recent tragic events thought it might be helpful to share information, particularly for younger folks. 1/
While we’ve gotten better at treating it as a whole and mortality rates are decreasing, we’re seeing a consistent increase in incidence in patients aged 20-49. I can confirm this in my clinical practice. Current guidelines recommend screening for colon cancer between the ages 2/
of 45-50 for the general population but should be earlier for those with family history or certain genetic syndromes. Ask your doctor if you think you’re at higher risk and should be screened sooner. Risk factors for colon cancer include older age, inflammatory bowel disease, 3/
family history, smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, low vitamin D levels, high red meat consumption, and low consumption of fruits and vegetables. Diabetes may also increase risk but the data is complicated. Symptoms may include change in bowel habits, 4/
bleeding in stool, weight loss, anorexia, unexplained iron deficiency anemia. If you're concerned check with your doctor. While it's not common in young people, don't assume just because you're young that you're in the clear. Know your body and ask questions. #cancersucks
