I keep seeing people say "Get screened for colon cancer" and folks, under 40 it's almost impossible to get most insurance to cover a screening. Even with a family history of cancer, you're unlikely to get a referral under 40 without symptoms.
My VA insurance will cover it because of family history, and even still my doc won't refer me for it yet because the latest recommendations are for 45 & I'm only 43. And I have an excellent doctor who loves to send me for tests for things that are likely to be an issue.
The reason it is so lethal is honestly that we don't screen for it without symptoms before 45 & by the time you have symptoms it is often quite advanced. Same with ovarian cancer. America's medical system is why the "underlying condition" aspect of Covid deaths made no sense
We don't really do preventative care & we barely do a full physical every 3 years. And that all assumes you have good insurance, a good doctor, and the knowledge and personality to advocate for yourself. It take a lot to be healthy in America. Especially if you're Black.
