tw // poverty shaming

as a leftist of sorts and as someone who grew up as working class, I’ve always taken offence when people say things about where I’m from ‘cause I love Manchester so much and sure, my family may not have had much but they gave me everything I ever needed...
... I’ve staunchly defended this ever since I knew that class was a thing and that we were the ones seen as inferior. Fast forward maybe 6 years and my god, the class divide makes itself very plain indeed.
One day I was chilling with a friend whom I loved very much, we were sat up on a hill overlooking the bay. He points out a town in the distance. He then proceeds to say ‘oh yeah that’s one of the most deprived towns in England’ and talks about how everyone has six fingers...
(factually untrue of course) he then proceeds to talk about how much of a shithole said place is, berating the people and saying that I should never ever go there.

I never said anything to him since he was my friend, but ever since the dust settled, I’ve just been thinking...
...really? you’re just gonna sit there and shame and berate an entire town just because it’s deprived? blaming the people and not the government for their plight? Tory behaviour of the highest order, if you ask me. This same person goes on endlessly about social justice too.
If you care so much about social justice, then why berate the poor and blame them for their plight? Why do you sit across the bay and shame them? You have your nice new home to go to, you don’t struggle, so please realise your privilege and stop berating people who are struggling
End of thread. Fuck the Tories.
