I’ve been mulling on this for months but here is my thread about the City of New York over the last few months since COVID-19
1. Disclaimer if you’ve left the city because you had to take care of your family member, a partner, or yourself because of being vulnerable, when I go off on people who left I am not talking to you.
Ok so New York is the city I am happy to be born & raised in. Lots of young people come to New York for a variety of reasons, a lot of folks my age came because they seem Gossip girl or because they wanted to be in “diverse city”
As soon as COVID happened I immediately knew there was no other place I wanted to be. Because in dark times New Yorkers ALWAYS HAVE each other’s backs. Especially working class New Yorkers
And it was true community members showing up for one another, people offering delivery to folks they don’t know and people introducing themselves to folks on their block so they know they have someone to call.
We HAD NOTHING, except for bodegas because obviously bodegas will ALWAYS have our needs (toilet paper). People began to leave I noticed it was a lot of privileged folks or folks who just couldn’t handle it. It saddened me and angered me
It was sad because when stuff got tough people left, the same folks that wanted diversity, loved the city when it opened but didn’t have the love to stay.
For all of you who say New York is “dead” or “gone” please have several seats & take a number ppl have been writing off this city for a long time. For those who left (again besides disclaimer) I might eternally be mad at you but don’t come frolicking back wanting a welcome party
