Leave it to academics to try to do thought exercise about just getting in-person conferences up and running with plans that protect attendees but don’t consider the damage of flying in hundreds or thousands of potential vectors to a single city https://twitter.com/arumshisky/status/1299696463220486145
If you’re sick, we just don’t let you into the conference venue. But you’re still stuck in another city and exposing hotel workers and literally anyone else you come into contact with. Is your uni footing that long hotel stay so you don’t have to travel while sick? Now what?
Imagine being a grad student feeling pressured to fly out to one of these things because the organizers felt it was safe to do in-person! Imagine asking a grad student to pay an extra $300 for testing because some folks in the field are already tired of virtual conferences!
