Can we make dua for non-Muslims who have died? [THREAD]
What has become a common trend among many high profile speakers is to pray for a dead celebrity when they die.

It has happened with Kobe Bryant, and now with Chadwick Boseman.
But the question is - how Islamic is this?

The most common argument brought forth is the following hadith:
Based upon this hadith, they claim that it means we must respect all humanity.

However, if we actually take a look at the two ahadith recorded along with it, a different story is revealed:
Thus, based upon those two and this one below, we can see that it is not standing up for a kafir, but rather as a reminder of death, and to show respect to the family.
Another excuse also used is that a kafir may have never known about Islam, and thus is counted from Ahlul Fatra - those who Allah will test to see where they will go on the day of judgement.

However, this can easily be refuted by the fact that it would be impossible...
...for a person who lives in the West, surrounded by mass media on all sides, that they will not know of Islam, or know of Muslims.

The final excuse which I have come across is one of Ir'jaa.
Stating for example that "We don't know what's in his heart! He might have died upon Islam secretly!"

As the Sunnah states, we judge by what is apparent. If it is apparent that a person is upon kufr, then this person can thus be deemed as a kafir.
And finally, for those who claim that Allah will forgive a person who died upon kufr, let me remind you of the following ayah.

If this was the case, why would Allah say "No!"

Because when you die, that's the end. There are no more good deeds that you can do after the Barzakh.
The Prophet (saw) was prohibited from making dua for his own parents who died upon kufr.

If he didn't make dua, and he was the most compassionate of people, then who the hell do these imams or shuyukh think they are?
This doesn't mean that you don't give condolences. Give condolences to the family, as they have lost a loved one.
