Pointing out the fact that the protests in the streets are happening on @realDonaldTrump watch isn't, to my mind, an effective response to Trump's call for law and order and his appeal to white fear and grievance. 1/
During his RNC speech @realDonaldTrump said, "Just imagine if the so-called peaceful demonstrators in the streets were in charge of every lever of power in the U.S. government." For him, the protest and violence constitute evidence of the so-called "radical threat." 2/
Pointing out that the disorder is happening on his watch isn't an effective counter to the rhetoric of law and order. Don't compare this to the Nixon election of 1968. The election of 1972 should come to mind instead. 3/
You can see the tension in this response immediately: 1) you argue that the violence has happened on his watch and then 2) you suggests that the protests will play into his hands and motivate undecided suburban voters to vote for him. 4/
