Yesterday, I stood in line at a store and noticed a woman in front of me wearing a shirt that revealed her role as a home caregiver. I thought of my grandfather and his struggle with #Alzheimers and I immediately thanked her for doing the hardest, least recognized job on Earth.
I couldn't see her smile through the mask, but her eyes told the story, and we held up the line for a minute or two as we recognized each other's journey and the cruelty of a disease that steals everything from you but leaves you here to be on full display in your weakest hours.
Our interaction lasted less than 90 seconds, but it felt liked we'd released two lifetimes-worth of anguish and uncertainty and a shared understanding of the sort of persistence it takes to consistently care for others (like she has) on a daily basis.
Thank you to the home caregivers and the youth caregivers, and to the folks who support these silent heroes like @AlzAuthors and @WeAreHFC and @alzassociation.
Since today is #ShamelessSelfpromoSaturday I plan to RT books, blogs, and podcasts dedicated to fighting #Alzheimers and #dementia. If you’ve written one yourself, please drop a link on this thread and help spread the stories of our essential heroes far and wide.
