Now that most of the conference nitty-gritties are done away with, I get to reap the fruits of our labour. I am amazed by the dynamic interpretation of food, masculinity and power by our presenters. So I will do a thread of the line-up over the next few days #devouringmen
I started with @efbond& #39;s excellent & #39;Sugar Time: Memories of Scottish Empire through Contemporary Art and Performance& #39; where she draws links between contemporary art and performance, the residues and memories of sugar and its connections with the Scottish empire. #devouringmen
Next I turned to @DrHarrietArcher& #39;s fascinating presentation & #39;The Sour Cross: Kingship and Gustatory Perception in Shakespeare& #39;s Richard II. She connects the metaphors of sourness in the play to bad leadership and Richard& #39;s eventual deposition. #devouringmen
After this sweet & sour entry into the conference, I watched Mona Becker& #39;s interesting & #39;Cannibals Cooking Cats: Narratives of Food, Dignity and Agency in Shoah Drama and Testimony.& #39; She gives us cannibalism, cats and the memories and horrors of concentration camps. #devouringmen
Next up was Rebecca Mazumdar& #39;s fabulous & #39;"Get busy with the can opener, will you, Sally?": The Legacy of the Fallout Shelter in Contemporary Prepper Foodways.& #39; Here we get prepper and survivalist cultures, foodways, hypermasculinity, and also POSSUMS! #devouringmen
