google: we need people to enter six digit numbers. How should we do that?
eng1: an <input type=text size=6>?
eng2: nah, <input type=number size=6>!
eng3: SHUT THE FUCK UP BOTH YOU YOU. We'll use <input type=tel size=1> and then just use SIX of them!
I understand why it happens but I was deeply amused by how many people told me why they used type=tel instead of type=number, because of how browsers implement it and what the standard says and such.
this is a webpage by google.
The only place they don't have the most popular browser with a good 40+% lead on the #2 browser is on Tablets, where Safari is #1, with Chrome being a close second.
if google wanted to make a new input type or an attribute to control how <input type=number> worked, they could, and no one could stop them
"but they have to obey the HTML spec!"
1. First of all, no, they don't. Do you not remember IE?
2. Who was the primary author of the HTML5 spec and who does he work for?
(Hixie, and Google)
So I'm looking forward to the next version of Chrome adding support for HTML6, which is just like HTML5 except it adds support for whatever the heck the Google Voice team was trying to do here before they paniced and went with six 1-digit telephone numbers.
