when selena turned 5 years old, selena’s parents, mandy and ricardo, divorced.
selena’s family struggled a lot because of financial troubles. they had to search for quarters to get gas for their cars or walk to their local dollar store to purchase spaghetti for dinner.
selena stated: “i was frustrated that my parents weren't together, and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me. i’m terrified of what i would have become if i’d stayed in texas."
selena was diagnosed with lupus sometime between 2012 and early 2014. but later, in 2015, she shared that she was battling lupus and undergoing chemotherapy to treat it. 
what is lupus? an autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, including joints, skin and internal organs, and causes the immune system to be unable to tell the difference between foreign invaders and healthy tissues.
the main symptoms of lupus are: swollen joints, fever, fatigue, rashes, chest pain, hair loss, anemia, and more. but also depression, anxiety, and panic attacks can be side effects of lupus.
there is no cure for lupus at the present time but there are treatments.
during these years selena has been struggling a lot because of depression due to several breaking- ups with her ex boyfriend and lupus.
in 2016, selena gomez cancelled her revival tour due to her mental health.
in 2016, selena gomez reportedly enters rehab to deal with panick attacks and depression.
in 2017, selena gomez had a kidney transplant due to lupus complications. her friend, francia raisa, donated her the kidney.
during the transplant, selena broke an artery. an emergency surgery was conducted to build a new artery using a vein from her leg.
in 2017, a few days before transplant, selena gomez posted this in her instagram thinking that it would have been her last post.

in 2018, selena took a long break from social medias. before leaving social media, selena did an instagram live answering questions from fans and said depression had consumed her life for 5 years.
in 2018, selena went to rehab due to a mental breakdown after a treatment in hospital because of her low blood cell count. selena tried ripping the IV's out of her arm.
in 2020, selena gomez admitted to suffer of bipolar disorder during an instagram live with miley cyrus.
