Tributes to one of the greatest hockey player in the world, Major Dhyan Chand Singh Bais on his birth anniversary also celebrated as #NationalSportsDay every year on 29th August.

Major Dhyan Chand was born on 29 Aug 1905 in Allahabad (Prayagraj). Born in a Rajput family, Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army at the age of 16.

His real name was Dhyan Singh, but he was called Dhyan Chand because he used to practise in the moonlight.

In the age & society of sports stars who get unending media coverage and are lapped up by big brands with billion dollar contract, it is hard to think of a name that became a sports icon by hard work. Dhyan Chand is still regarded as the greatest field hockey player of all times.
He was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats, in addition to earning 3 Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 & 1936.

Hitler was so impressed with Maj Dhyan's skills that he offered him a position of Colonel in German Army which Dhyan Chand refused, "India is not for sale".
1928 Olympic Gold Medal winning Hockey Team. This was the first Gold Medal for India. India played 5 matches and won all and scored 29 goals out of which 14 goals were scored by Dhyan Chand Singh Bais and was top scorer of the Tournament. Dhyan Chand is standing fourth from left.
1932 Olympic Gold Medal wining Hockey Team. This was the second Gold Medal for India. India retained Olympic Gold it had first won in the 1928 Amsterdam Games.

25 out of 35 goals scored by India in the 1932 Olympics were by the two brothers -- Roop Singh (13) & Dhyan Chand (12).

Apart from hockey, Dhyan Chand was a good cricketer. He played billiards & carom with equal brilliance.

He was the prime member of Indian hockey team which brought three Olympic gold medals in field hockey.
Dhyan Chand Singh Bais was the greatest sportsman ever born in Indian subcontinent.

For an athlete to remain unbeaten for an entire career, in any sporting discipline, is itself a record.
