Low traffic neighbourhoods - some thoughts: (1) People are acting as though traffic on surrounding roads has *suddenly* appeared, ruining the otherwise traffic-free paradise that existed before. This is clearly a nonsense.
(2) LTNs as with any infrastructure change, TAKE TIME to bed in. Time for some (I accept not all) people to realise that sitting in a box in a queue isn’t the best way to get around. Time for people to alter the time they travel. Time for people to find alternative routes.
(3) This is part of a wider, necessary transformational change about how we fundamentally get around. Cars in cities like London just don’t make sense in the context of the climate emergency - which is still v much there, despite COVID-19.
(4) People are fundamentally selfish. I don’t have kids & don’t intend to, but I’m thrilled to see children playing in previously dangerous roads - running, scooting etc. Why grown adults can’t understand these benefits is beyond me 🤷‍♀️
(5) A key principle is ‘build infrastructure and they will come’. This applies to cycle lanes too. You have to make roads inviting for people to feel OK about cycling to work or the shops, or scooting, or walking. And get the word out!
(6) To those saying LTNs hv been ‘imposed’- they are part of ‘suck it & see’ consultation, being tweaked as they go. You can’t consult effectively on something if you can’t see how it works! All residents can input legally - how is wrecking planters a constructive way to do this?
