In general drugs should not be used during pregnancy UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and under the guidance of your doctor because many can harm the unborn baby.

About 2-3% of all birth defects result from drugs that are taken during pregnancy especially during the 1st trimester.

• Some Common But HARMFUL DRUGS In Pregnancy

I. ANTIBIOTICS
1. CHLORAMPHENICOL
- This causes blood disorders and "Grey Baby Syndrome"

2. CIPROFLOXACIN AND LEVOFLOXACIN
- It causes problems with babies muscles and joints
- They can cause MISCARRIAGE!
- Serious Bleeding disorder

3. TETRACYCLINE
- It causes yellow brown discoloration of the teeth.

4. STREPTOMYCIN
- An antibiotics used in TB treatment causes DEAFNESS to the unborn child

There are MANY others...Don't abuse antibiotics and don't take any during pregnancy UNLESS prescribed by a DOCTOR!!!

II. PAIN RELIEF DRUGS
1. ASPIRIN
- Miscarriage
- Congenital defects on the baby
- Bleeding in the brain of the premature baby.

2. IBUPROFEN
- It reduces amniotic fluid in pregnancy
- It increases the baby's risk of being asthmatic

No matter the pain, allow a doctor PRESCRIBE!

III. ANTI HYPERTENSIVES
1. AMLODIPINE
2. LISINOPRIL
3. ENALAPRIL etc

- Effect On The Unborn Baby:
1. Kidney damage
2. Reduce amniotic fluid
3. Defects to the lungs, face and limbs
4. Serious injuries to the fetus.

There are good drugs for hypertension, your doctor knows...

IV. PIMPLE DRUGS
- Hormonal changes can cause an outbreak of pimples on pregnant women. Please if you're pregnant or you intend to be...

PLEASE AVOID Isotertinon (Accutane)

- It causes birth defects

The pimples will clear after pregnancy, don't damage your child pls...

V. ANTICONVULSANTS
- These are drugs used in controlling seizures e.g. Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Valprate
